Kiss
Photoshop collage
"She raised one hand and flexed its fingers and wondered, as she
had sometimes before, how this thing, this machine for griping, this fleshy
spider on the end of her arm, came to be hers, entirely at her command.
Or did it have a mind of its own? She bent her finger and straightened
it. The mystery was in the instant before it moved, the dividing moment
between not moving and moving, when her intention took effect. It was
like a wave breaking. If she could only find herself at the crest, she
thought, she might find the secret of herself, that part that was really
in charge. She brought her forefinger closer to her face and stared at
it, urging it to move. It remained still because she was pretending, she
was not entirely serious, and because willing it to move, or being about
to move it, was not the same as actually moving it. And when she did crook
it finally, the action seemed to start in the finger itself, not in some
part of her mind. When did it know to move? There was no catching herself
out. It was either-or. There was no stitching, no seam, and yet she knew
that behind the smooth continuous fabric was a real self--was it her soul?--which
took the decision to cease pretending, and gave the final command."

I made this for the Visual

FLOW
Ink on paper
I wonder how soon I will begin to take good health for granted again.
Finally well enough this morning to rise from bed, wash, and get dressed.
What a relief to be able to turn my attention to making something, an
activity that’s a healing tonic itself, and better yet to make something
and donate it, with the hope that my small gesture contributes something
to help artists living with HIV/AIDS.

natural environment revisited
scanned Fujichrome
I've considered my environment the urban environment for most of my life--having
lived there in DC, LA, and NYC. Residing in New York has driven my interest
in urban "landscape photography" to new heights and (I hope)
depths. But a trip two years ago got me thinking about how to approach
natural landscape photography in a way that has something to say that
hasn't been said for centuries.. Mostly the paths I'm heading down involve
challenging the way we view such pieces typically versus how we might
view them to capture some of the awe Nature inspires when I see her amazing
beauty. This effort is using a lot of raw materials that look a whole
lot like calendar photos. But I know they're different...

Out of a fit of anger, came “Fifty”. Though the initial
inspiration was to create a special piece for my sister who turned 50,
the experience was a powerfully cathartic one for me.
